RDAIS, together with researchers from the University of Wollongong and regional partners, has established the Illawarra Shoalhaven Food Futures Taskforce. Building on community insights from the Let’s Talk About Food project, the Taskforce brings stakeholders across health, education, business, community and government together to strengthen our local food system.
The Taskforce is working to create a fair, sustainable and resilient food system which supports the health and well-being of all communities in the region, fosters local economic strength, and protects our natural resources for future generations.
To guide this work, the Taskforce has developed a Food Charter, which sets out six key focus areas for regional action:
- Food Security & Access
- Food for Health & Wellbeing
- Local Food Economy
- Food Production, Agriculture & Fisheries
- Food Environments & Planning
- Food Knowledge & Education
Across these six areas, the Charter also identifies seven cross-cutting action priorities that will connect and strengthen efforts across the food system. These include policy and regulation, program funding and investment, advocacy and public engagement, partnerships and governance, monitoring and evaluation, capacity building and workforce development, and research and innovation.
Over the next five years, stakeholders from all parts of the food system, including local government, health services, education providers, food producers, retailers, community organisations and advocacy groups, will help shape and deliver these priorities.
